Why Moving Insurance is Essential
Moving insurance safeguards your possessions from unforeseen events during transportation. Despite our meticulous care and experienced team, accidents can happen. Ensure your valuables are protected with our comprehensive insurance options.

We take great care to help protect your belongings by making sure our team is trained and aware during the moving process in handling your household furnishings and protecting your home.

Sometimes, despite best efforts, damages can occur, so we want to make sure our clients are educated about coverage options when hiring a moving company so you can make the best decision for your needs.

Selecting the Right Coverage
Full coverage can be purchased from your mover or from a third party. Additionally, you can check to see if your homeowner's or renter's insurance would cover any loss or damage during moves.
Types of Coverage
Standard Coverage
-
All movers are required under federal law to offer a minimum level of damage protection, but that minimum level is based on the weight of the item, not its value. This minimum coverage is calculated at 60 cents per pound. This provides minimal coverage per lost or damaged item, most likely less than you might expect.
-
For example, if a 200-pound Leather Sofa you bought for $2,000 is damaged or lost in the move, that protection would only pay you $120 for that item.
Full Value Protection
-
Full Value Protection is offered as an option. The coverage has a $10,000 maximum, $225 deductible, $2,000 per item maximum, with a $250 premium.

3rd-Party Insurance
-
For those seeking additional protection, third-party insurance can offer more extensive coverage beyond the basic and full value options.

BAKER INTERNATIONAL
We work with a preferred 3rd party insurance carrier that can provide you with full coverage insurance.

To provide you with pricing options, they will require the moving carrier’s information, the value of your goods, and the estimated weight of the shipment.
We’d be happy to assist you in determining the weight of the shipment if you’re looking to explore this option.

Baker International does not offer single-piece coverage.

HOMEOWNERS INSURANCE

You can check with your homeowners/renters insurance carrier and see if they offer coverage above the $0.60 per pound offered at our standard rates.

This is typically done in the form of a rider added to the policy. If offered, the usual cost is between $50.00 and $100.00. They will typically request our licensing information to verify that a reputable company is handling the move.
Please call us at 480-408-7444, and we will be happy to discuss the best option for your specific situation.

Moving Insurance FAQs
What does moving insurance cover?
Moving insurance typically covers loss or damage to your belongings during transit. The extent of coverage depends on the type of insurance you choose.
How do I decide which insurance coverage is right for me?
Consider the value of your belongings and your budget. If you have high-value items, Full Value Protection or third-party insurance might be the best option.
How do I file a claim?
In the unfortunate event that you need to file a claim, follow these steps:
Notify us immediately upon discovering the damage or loss.
Document the damage with photos and a detailed description.
Submit a written claim within 30 days of your move.
Is there anything that moving insurance does not cover?
Yes, there are exclusions in moving insurance policies. These often include:
Items of extraordinary value not covered under the policy.
Damage due to natural disasters.
Items packed by the owner without your moving carrier’s inspection.
Pre-existing damage or wear and tear.
What are some tips when moving with valuables?
Declared Value
Ensure you declare the full value of your belongings when opting for Full Value Protection to avoid any shortfall in coverage.
Storage Coverage
If your items need to be stored temporarily during the moving process, inquire about storage insurance to cover this period as well.
High-Value Items
Notify us of any high-value items (e.g., jewelry, fine art) prior to the move. These items may require additional documentation and separate coverage.
We strongly recommend that you move all high-value items (monetary or personal worth) yourself for safekeeping and that you ensure all dresser and nightstand drawers are emptied of these items prior to your move.
